We REALLY Need Help This Weekend – Last Minute Signature Gathering Effort
I apologize for sending out three emails in three days on this subject – but we’re making progress with our signature gathering effort this weekend in front of the Santee PetSmart-

We will be there from 9 to 5 both Saturday and Sunday. The goal is to get 500 signatures asking 77th District Assemblyman Brian Jones to sponsor a ferret legalization bill. The bill has to be introduced by January 28th or we are out of luck for another year. We’ve worked really hard to find a sponsor without any luck so far.

We’re hoping this show of grassroots support will convince him to do it. We were able to borrow this ferret costume and he or she will be holding a sign:

We’ll have a table and chairs, I’ve got lots of clipboards, literature, I’ll bring the calendars, Jami is going to try to bring balloons. I’m hoping it will be festive. Feel free to make your own signs and bring them.

Ideally, we’d like at least three people there at a time – with one in the ferret costume. Are there any hams among us? (you need to be on the smaller side to fit into the costume – how about drafting your kids?)

If we can fill up the schedule – so far with only two people (?!) I’ll invite the media and see if we can get some press coverage. I wouldn’t be surprised if a TV station or newspaper covered the event. That will really drive the message to Assemblyman Brian Jones.
Can you spare an hour or two this weekend? For the little guy?!

I just sent this out, has some good points for people when they contact their representative.

Hi Gail –

Thank you for taking my call and your hospitality. Boy there is a lot of information below! So I better ask at the top – we are requesting a meeting with Assemblyman Jones on the ferret issue. The 77th Assembly District is probably one of the top three in terms of the ferret population.

Briefly, we’ve been fighting the ferret ban for twenty years. In 2000 the Fish and Game Commission said we needed an EIR before they would even consider the issue.

As an aside, it is interesting the city of San Diego demanded an EIR from Walmart super centers as a way to keep those giant Walmarts out of San Diego.

In September our preliminary EIR was completed. It is online at http://ferretsanon.com/EIR/Final_Report.pdf The Fish and Game Commission has not yet reacted to it, except for President Jim Kellogg saying ferret owners are breaking the law and need to be punished. (we’re putting that on YouTube.)

Another note – I just got a phone call from a man who bought his girl friend two ferrets. The girl friend is in a nasty child custody dispute. The ex already complained about their dog, now they have to get the ferrets out of the house.

The report basically discusses the arguments against ferret legalization:

• Ferrets Will Go Feral
All of the ideal conditions for establishment of a feral ferret population have not yet been met in California: a moderate climate, a superabundance of preferred prey, a community devoid of competitors and predators, and repeated introductions of large founder populations. (page 63)

• Ferrets As a Treat to Agriculture
The literature documents that ferrets may have impacted European poultry production, especially in the late 19th and early 20th century. The literature is largely devoid of any instances of ferrets impacting agricultural resources in the USA. USA has, for the most part, phased out household poultry and egg production and now relies almost exclusively on commercial facilities (confined animal feeding operations); these facilities may be better protected from predators than traditional domestic hen houses and coops. Questionnaires of agricultural departments in the USA has not revealed any major opposition to ferrets; where agricultural agency personnel have responded negatively to ferret legalization, their concerns focused on the risk of ferrets biting humans or on the risk of ferrets establishing feral breeding populations, and not on the impact of agricultural resources. This issue may not need to be analyzed further in the EIR. (page 95)

• Public Health Issues
The medical community and various State agencies have reversed their stance on rabies issues pertaining to ferrets, from emphatic statements in the 20th century that ferrets are not appropriate pets because of their proclivity to bite and the absence of effective vaccines, to neutral statements in the 21st century that ferrets should receive rabies vaccinations like other household pets. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention state that currently, at least in the USA, rabies is a rare disease and is relegated largely to non-pet vectors. The vaccination of ferrets for rabies (and distemper) could be made mandatory, regardless of whether ferret ownership is legal or illegal in California. Ferrets sold after about 12 weeks of age should be vaccinated before sale. For those sold before 12 weeks of age, the new owner could be required to show proof of rabies vaccination by a certain time, such as 13 weeks of age. Every effort should be made to prevent ferrets from escaping confinement; any stray or feral ferret captured could be mandatorily held in quarantine until it is indicated that they are free of rabies. Public education and outreach should also be implemented. Provided that effective mitigation measures are incorporated into a legalization action, this potential impact upon human health could be reduced to a less-than significant level. This issue may not need to be analyzed further in the EIR. (page 100)

The Economic Impacts of the ferret ban

We know from the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council that Californians spend $5,500,000 on ferrets annually which means the state collects about $400,000 each year in sales tax revenue. How much more would be spent if ferrets were legal? I don’t think there is any accurate way to answer the question.

But – we also know that 70 to 80% of the ferrets sold in Nevada, Arizona and Oregon are intended for the California Market.

We know that Marshall Ferrets sells about 150,000 ferrets annually and they produce 70% of the ferrets in this country (back yard breeding is pretty limited for ferrets, most states where they are legal require them to be sold sterilized, and ferrets have unusually husbandry – both male and female must be in season, and intact ferrets smell too bad to be household pets)

Also, does not include lost revenue to the veterinarians. And because people are afraid to take their ferrets to the vet, vets who treat ferrets often times charge considerably more.

Bad Response From Senator Pavley

A member has forwarded a response from Senator Pavley regarding sponsoring a ferret legalization bill. It is not good news but perhaps it is the start of a dialogue.

Thank you for your letter concerning legalizing ferrets in California. The last time the legislature dealt with this topic was in 2004 with Senate Bill 89. Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed SB 89 (Alpert), for two reasons. First, he was concerned with the risks of ferrets living in the wild. Second, he wanted to make sure that California’s environmental laws, including the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), were followed. CEQA requires an environmental study before state actions are taken that could have a significant effect on the environment.

Note: We sent Senator Pavley the preliminary EIR which documents why domestic ferrets cannot establish in the wild.

Current law requires an evaluation by the Department of Fish and Game. Governor Schwarzenegger made this specific point in his veto message of SB 89. To view the veto message you may visit www.sen.ca.gov and type SB 89 into the search engine.

As the chair the Senate Natural Resources and Water Committee, I am aware of the budget cuts that have been made at the Department of Fish and Game and the strong likelihood that this department will acquire even more cuts in the ongoing legislative session. In this economic downturn, it is unlikely that California can find funds for an environmental impact report on the effects of legalizing ferret ownership.

Note: No one asked for an EIR. The Fish and Game Commission changed their position in 2005 and created a specific policy entitled MISCELLANEOUS POLICIES

Arnold Sucked

I was more than saddened by Governor Schwarzenegger's commuting the prison sentence for Esteban Nuñez's prison sentence. Here we have a murderer - someone who attacked three other people - and that is the plea Arnold heard on his way out. Oh yeah, his father was speaker of the California Assembly. That might have made a difference.

We asked Governor Schwarzenegger to commute the sentence of California ferrets. Over his 7 years as Governor we sent multiple appeals, thousands of signatures, phone calls. Not one even got an answer.

Arnold wasn't much "for little guy" but for the politically connected he came through, even at the expense of our perception of a fair and impartial government.

The point is it is hard to take this seriously. Where is the fairness and access? There hasn't been any and we all suffer.

Glad the bastard is gone. Don't buy his upcoming book.

Need to be Punished, Need to be Punished

Yesterday was a surreal day in front of the Fish and Game Commission. I thought we did an excellent job documenting our case in asking the Commission follow their own guidelines in delisting ferrets from the prohibited species list. I did feel intimidated, I had the feeling the Commission looks down on the issue. But I did ok.

At the end, President Jim Kellogg started to talk. At first I held out hope that my facts and figures impressed him. Instead he took a bizarre turn.

He mentioned shopping at pet stores and seeing the photos of ferret supplies just like in my powerpoint presentation. Then he said "it really annoys me that they can sell that stuff in a state where ferrets are illegal."

And next was the truly bizarre part, he said "ferret owners need to be punished."

Today, one day later I'm cleaning house. It is the time of week I get to spend the most time with the ferrets. They are downstairs in forbidden territory pulling the soles out of Jim's expensive shoes. A better time could not be had.

They are healthy and happy. I worry about my eldest, Fausto. Ferrets don't live that long and Fausto is getting up there.

And darn it, I have this rap song in my head... "need to be punished, need to be punished..."

We will put Mr. Kellogg's statements up in YouTube. Perhaps we can make a rap version. Maybe we'll even go viral.

Just arrived in my inbox regarding our Craigslist ads for Reno/Tahoe

You are being flaged because you are being an asshole. First, we Nevadans are sick and tired of you Californians and your ferret drama.

We are sick of groups like yours encouraging people to illegally obtain ferrets from other states and we are sick of our shelters being full because you people break the law. The rescue groups here have plenty to do on their own without being asked to rescue the animals you people keep illegally.

Is the Reno CL for SOME Californians as well? Yes it is, but it is also full of people like me who are sick of your group's name being quoted when we are contacted by some Californian wanting to adopt and put at risk one of our pets.

And guess what? I happen to be a ferret owner, a ferret foster for a rescue group and I happen to know they are not capable of survving in the wild. I am flagging you for being an asshat and encouraging others to break the law.

Fish and Game has been Helpful

OMG, I have to give credit where credit is due and say the Fish and Game Commission has been helpful as we try to move the initial study into a request for the EIR.

Jon Fischer, the acting director of the Fish and Game Commission has been slipping me a little insight. At first I thought he flatly rejected the study but as I learn more I see his initial comments had merit.

The whole process is ridiculous, no other animal has ever required this process.

But Mr. Fischer has told me what to avoid, that the Sierra Club looks for error in procedure, not facts, and that could sink us.

And it has been extremely hard to find someone to guide us throught the buracracy.

I did get a little help from a friend of mine who is an urban planner. I'm not a CEQA expert but I know a lot more than I did.

And it appears I over reacted to the intial disaproval of the report from Fish and Game. I wasn't elected to this post you know... what I lack in knowledge I try to make up for in determination, not always the best formula. But we are going to wrap this up and get these little guys legalized.

Hello Mr. Fischer –

I called the Fish and Game Commission this morning asking if there was a procedure to request an item be placed on the agenda.

Please consider this the official request.

Based on the April 6th, 2000 meeting, where according to the report submitted by Dr Graening:

The California Fish and Game Commission, As explained at the meeting, a regulatory action by the Commission is considered a project under the California Environmental Quality Act, which requires the preparation of an environmental document. Therefore, at the conclusion of the public testimony, the Commission directed the Californians for Ferret Legalization, as project proponents, to fund the preparation of the environmental document to assess the potential impact to the environment of this proposed action. The Commission would not be in a position to again consider this matter until such environmental document were prepared.

Since the Document has been prepared and submitted, we are asking the Commission again consider the issue of ferret legalization.

Governor Calls for Environmental Impact Report Prior to Legalizing Ferrets
Fish and Game Commission Ignores Our Request to Get Started After Preliminary Report Submitted

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has answered the first batch of letters from a letter writing and petition campaign organized by LegalizeFerrets.org with his standard answer:

“So far, no one has completed a study that proves that these little animals would be good, safe pets, and the California Environmental Quality Act requires that an Environmental Impact Report (EIR) be conducted first. An EIR evaluates the proposed project's impact on the environment. Until an EIR is conducted on the effects that ferrets have on the environment, it would be inappropriate to legalize ferrets as pets here in California.”

LegalizeFerrets.org has on two occasions Express Mailed a copy of our pre-Environmental Impact Report to Governor Schwarzenegger, posted on line at http://ferretsanon.com/EIR/Final_Report.pdf. His staff has been unable to confirm delivery even though we have a proof of delivery.

Even more frustrating is the position of the California Fish and Game Commission where acting Director Jon Fischer promptly labeled the report “missing the mark” and that it lacked scoping. Scoping is not included in the initial report.

We commissioned the “Initial Study” and are now asking the California Fish and Game Commission to file the “Notice of Preparation.” After more than two weeks we have not received an answer and we are consulting with an attorney.

Furthermore – from the Fish and Game Commission Meeting:

April 6, 2000. Time to be Tough

A lot of good things have happened. The LegalizeFerrets Revival was a great success. The video is out. Most of our bills are paid.

Still damn mad that no one in our state government has given me a call back, much less a answer. How is it we can produce our current environmental study, ask how to start the EIR process and be rejected with four words "it misses the mark" by Fish and Game Acting Director Jon Fischer?

Not feeling proud to be a Californian - but because the truth is with us - we are going to win this one.

Anyone Who Thinks We Live in a Free Country Hasn't Dealt With California Fish and Game

It's been two days since Jon Fischer, acting director of the California Fish and Game Commission dismissed the Sacramento State University report on ferrets as "missing the mark."

Several calls to Dale Steele at the Department of Fish and Game have not been returned. I'll try calling him from a different phone today in case he has flagged my cell phone.

To me it is simply inconceivable they would be allowed to block an effort without due process. It does sicken me to hear people say "we live in the greatest nation on earth..." because if you keep saying that you can't question it.

A free country would respect your rights. If something is not right there would be a way to challenge it.

If this were going on just awhile I'd be more patient, but 20+ years trying to legalize ferrets. Truly ridiculous. Good thing Fausto loves me so much. Wish I could take him outside.

Sick Feeling and the lack of Due Process

I have had a sick feeling since speaking to Jon Fischer from the Department of Fish and Game. I didn't realize until later that he is the acting director of the Fish and Game Commission.

Mr. Fischer dismissed our extensive survey, our Pre-EIR document as "missing the mark."

Not surprising, anything report that doesn't mention ferrets killing human babies and "free roaming" ferrets attacking endangered species is not going to fly with the Fish and Game Commission.

What really bothers me is lack of due process. Due process is so fundamental to a people's freedom. With three words Mr. Fischer is trying to deny us our due process.

Well, that isn't going to fly.

But I really wish I lived in a state where the fight for our rights, going on 25 years and still unsucessful, didn't consume so much time and money.

Not only are we financially poorer, we're less free. This has got to end - and it's going to end. I just wish it were sooner rather than later.

It is past time ferrets were legal in California!

Legalizing pet ferrets affects hundreds of thousands of Californians, even though many citizens may be unfamiliar with the State’s 77-year-old ferret ban. The California Veterinary Medical Association has long agreed that pet ferrets should be legal. State legislators agreed six years ago. But the Governor blocked ferret legalization, when he vetoed the Ferret Amnesty Bill (9/30/2004). Schwarzenegger said: “I love ferrets. I co-starred with a ferret in Kindergarten Cop. However, this bill is too bureaucratic and it legalizes ferrets prior to conducting an environmental impact report.”

The requested Environmental Impact Report (EIR) is nearly complete, and the evidence clear. Leading SSU researcher, G. O. Graening PhD, reports: “None of the questionnaires, [which were sent to] every wildlife agency, health department, and agricultural department in the 50 US states and Canadian Provinces, received to date have documented the establishment of any feral breeding populations, or negative interactions with wildlife, or significant impacts on human health or safety.”

The political climate surrounding ferret legalization puts the Department of Fish and Game (DFG) at center stage. The DFG has gone to great lengths to resist ferret legalization, by identifying domestic ferrets as “wild animals.” That’s like saying your Yorkie dog is dangerous because his origins trace back to the wolf family.

The DFG has gone so far as to invent a subgroup of ferrets that do not even exist, which they call: “Free-roaming domestic ferrets.” According to the DFG, these “free-roaming domestic ferrets” are dangerous to poultry and infants . However, no “free-ranging domestic ferrets” have ever been documented, as confirmed by SSU’s current findings. This false logic has been perpetuated by the DFG since 1933.

Let’s face facts too: Ferrets live in the homes of over 100,000 Californians. California’s vets are allowed by law to treat pet ferrets. However, the climate of illegality undermines access to proper care.

Castro Valley Vet Rene' C. Gandolfi said: “I have been treating ferrets here in California for over twenty years. In that time I’ve seen all sorts of problems resulting from the ban on ownership.” Ferret owners delay treatment or must travel vast distances to get veterinary help, according to Gandolfi. “I’ve seen pet owners traveling hundreds of miles to find a veterinarian who was willing to see them. In a couple of severe emergency cases , ferret owners had to make hour long trips to see us because they couldn’t be seen at a vet closer to home. That’s like making a human drive to Sacramento to get to the ER after having a heart attack in San Francisco.”
Gandolfi explains why the CVMA backs ferret legalization: “It is bad medicine and bad public health policy to have a pet species that isn’t receiving regular and competent veterinary care.”
Gandolfi dismissed suggestions that ferrets are dangerous to humans: “For over two decades we have been providing veterinary medical and surgical services for ferret owners. I have yet to meet a ferret that I felt posed a significant danger to any humans who might handle it. I have often told my staff that I am more concerned about being bitten by a hamster than by a ferret.” Gandolfi explained that the dangers he sees are not due to ferrets, but to the fearful and unsafe legal climate. Ferret owners are “constantly worried that their cherished companion will be confiscated.”

Inadequate access to medical care stands at odds with the reality of widespread ferret ownership in California. A leading pet industry trade group confirms that 27% of the nation’s ferret supplies are purchased in California.

Owning ferrets is legal in 48 other states. Veterinarians, scientists, elected officials and pet owners have effectively advocated for legalizing ferret ownership. The Governor’s questions have been answered by the EIR. Encourage the Governor and your representatives to support the Ferret Amnesty Bill, and enable sound scientific reason to trump politics once and for all in the ferret debate. Ferret owners have waited long enough: its past time to overturn the 1933 ferret ban.

Between Facebook and Twitter, blogging seems kind of outdated. But there are things going on and perhaps I should keep this blog post active.

More news on the EIR, or what to do with the EIR was discovered yesterday. I hate to tease but basically what we've discovered is that the only way to legalize ferrets is through the legislature. It is so hard to get things done in California - no wonder we are a mess.

We Don't Get A Lot Done On Saturday Mornings

Saturday mornings are kind of leisurely. I put the laundry away, clean the aquarium and I do it all with the help of my dog Shorty (the Corgi) and ferrets Fausto and Quito.

The ferrets live downstairs and I feel bad that they are isolated most of the time. But Saturday mornings I take my time and appreciate their help. Of course it takes a lot longer that way.

Pictured on the couch is my very shy dog Blue (she just got a Summer haircut) who just hopes the ferrets will leave her alone.

Only a few days things seemed discouraging. Well, they still are but how can anyone be gloomy when this photo arrives in your inbox?

That's my Fausto, fat, healthy and happy. This was a photo by Jamie K done last week at our calendar ferret shoot. The best ferret event I've ever been to. Too bad so many people missed it. I can't wait to see the other photos.

I'm also happy to report that Quito is doing well. He hasn't been on duck soup for a few days now. I actually saw him eat more than one kibble. (He had a hairball removed a couple of weeks ago.)

Any my Golden Retriever Bear seems to be doing better. We spent $1500 on vet bills for him two months ago but never got a diagnosis. He started to limp again. There is no money for vets but I gave him some metacam and he is back to his old self. I wish they made metacam for people.

And then there is the California EDD. Somewhere in a dark ivory tower there are people plotting how to make other's lives miserable. They sent me a notice that my claim has been denied. A lot of text, and then at the bottom of the page is a little check box - "this doesn't effect continued claims." So basically they are denying a claim I didn't make and I can continue to be one of California's long term unemployed.

The state does handle all its issues the way it handles the ferret issue and that is why we are up that creek without a paddle.

A check made out to me arrived at the Ferrets Anonymous (San Diego PO Box) with a note. "You are always passing on other's dilemmas... this is for Quito."

Quito had a hairball and required surgery. As I mark one year of unemployment, two months until we are foreclosed upon, unemployment insurance delayed because I declared $254 of self-employment... it was a boost.

The letter was from Harley, Phoebe and Stella.

I did manage to get Quito's surgery done on credit. It will be paid off shortly. Thank you Dr Jenkins and Crew!

Saturday mornings is my time to do laundry. Quito, Fausto and my corgi Shorty like to help. It takes a lot longer to get things done. But it was nice having Quito participate in the effort. I like having him be himself. Popping out of a drawer in the laundry room he nearly gave me a heart attack - so welcome back Quito.

But really things aren't so bad at my house. We do have the funds in the bank for that evil National City Mortgage. We've learned that loan modification is a fraud. It was explained to us that Obama is covering the bank's loans - not the borrowers, so mortgage companies don't have much reason to make any deals.

I thought I was fired for being gay at my last company. But they have since fired everyone over 45 - so I would have been fired shortly thereafter anyway.

I'm trying to launch my own company. I'd much rather have a regular pay check, those were the days! But I think of all the horrible bosses I've had (and I could write a book) and perhaps this is the best case.

But life is so full of stress. Now our Golden Retriever Bear is limping again. When we got Bear nearly six years ago I kept hearing horror stories of this breed dying from bone cancer. Even the dog in "Air Bud" died from bone cancer that year. Perhaps it is my unreasonable fear but I'd rather be able to order all the tests - though there isn't much one can do if it came out positive.

God these pets are expensive. The next pet in this house is getting pet insurance. But no new pets until things get financially resolved.

Then it is my fantasy to go to Las Vegas and get two baby ferrets! How fun!

Ferrets Are For Worrying

We stole the slogan "Ferrets Are More Fun" several years ago and created new artwork. Truth be told, ferrets are more worry would be a more accurate slogan.

I only have two ferrets. These are really bad economic times, I'm scared to death of another vet bill.

Fausto has had heliobactor infections three times. Today he's back to his fat self.

But I picked up Quito the other day and noticed how skinny he is. By nature he is a skinny ferret, but this was an unhealthy skinny.

When I was medicating Fausto, hiding his medicine in duck soup, Quito always wanted some. So I made an unmedicated batch for Quito.

Quito apparently decided he didn't want to eat regular ferret food anymore.

I considered switching them from Marshall Pet Products brand to the Totally Ferret turkey brand, so they have a mix of both foods. I can't tell which they prefer, but Fausto is doing well on it.

But Quito will only eat the Marshall's brand of duck soup. So I'm putting down as much as I can. And he eats it like white trash at the Home Town Buffet. I've put a little weight on him.

He still has a lot of energy - but I worry.

To Be Secretive Or Not

I just read an article online at http://www.queerty.com/californias-poll-4-equality-results-are-in-no-you-still-cant-see-them-yet-20090603/ and it sure reminds me of our issue.

I am a strong proponent to repeal Prop 8 but certainly not a decision maker in the process. There are people unhappy about the strategy to repeal Prop 8 cloaked in secrecy, just as some people want the strategy to legalize ferrets to be secretive.

It leaves me with an uncomfortable feeling that people in leadership positions think so little of the rank and file. While not everything needs to be broadcast, secrecy is a sure killer of any grassroots effort.

That's why I put our ferret legalization in the spotlight. Let the whole world see what we are doing. Ferret legalization is not rocket science and the more people who know about it the better.

Than again, no one is running commercials about "A Storm is Gathering - Ferret Legalization Hurts Me."

Where is Ferret Legalization at Ferrets Anonymous?

I'm a big fan of Lance M, President of Ferrets Anonymous. I think we have a number of disagreements. A quality person allows for disagreements, even invites them.

So I have to wonder, where is the ferret legalization effort at Ferrets Anonymous?

The latest issue of the PawPrint mentions what's ahead for FA:

So what’s coming for Ferrets Anonymous in 2009? Besides exciting new chapters cropping up in California’s central counties and elsewhere, and our bylaw updates - we have Laryssa N., who is knowledgeable about MySQL databases, who will be working with our existing website designer, Daphne B. from Maryland, who is responsible for the look and feel of www.ferretsanonymous.org, when she’s not working on Olympic figure skating websites. The website will be a primary focus to continue building and keeping in top shape to serve the needs of all ferret aficionados throughout California, as well as those looking to relocate to the Golden State (even though the “Gold” has been tarnished because of the ferret ban). I’m very much looking forward to seeing much accomplished this year with the FA Board, even with our slow start, as well as with the website, and increasing interaction amongst FA chapters.

I appreciate the organizational efforts but what about a goal? What is the purpose?

There is a lot of work to running an organization. It is impossible to do everything that needs to get done. Throw in rescues and it gets worse.

But I would like to see more focus on the actual legalization of ferrets in California.

The Working Group - Same Mistake Twice?

I'm excited that our EIR Consultant, Dr. Geo Graeining is preparing the first step towards an EIR to legalize ferrets in California. After so many years we are actually getting somewhere.

If you have been following this story you know that we had a false step back in January 2007. When money was offered to help legalize ferrets we decided to do the Environmental Impact Report. The best minds in ferret legalization got together and a strategy was mapped out.

Somewhere, they made a turn. It was decided unilaterally and without consultation that an EIR was not needed. Governor Schwarzenegger, they thought, merely needed a well-reasoned study to see the light.

There is a certain logic to this. The Department of Fish and Game and their allies at the Department of Agriculture and Department of Health Services have put out spurious research papers on ferrets for years. Fight fire with fire.

But this has been done before. And the head of the current working group might have had a hand in it. The result was a very enlightening paper CDFA 1990 Public Information Manual.

This paper was so well done that it made me a ferret-legalization advocate.

But it backfired.

The California Department of Fish and Game dug in their heels and became even more anti-ferret. They did not like to be shown up.

It came to mind because this paper was referenced on a DFG website. My fear is the next issue (and I have no idea when it will be out) will have a similar affect.

Ferret lovers are a cautious group. They don't want to make mistakes. Don't do this or it could set legalization back for decades! (not years - decades!) is something I often hear.

Use a professional and comply with whats been asked of us is my current reply. And based on the money that came in from CLIFFNotes readers - there is support for this position.

The Most Useful Piece of Info For Ferret Owners

My dog Bear left me a present. No, not that kind. He killed the squeaky toy and left the part that makes noise intact.

Now I don't have to shop for one of those toy pork-chops to squeak around trying to find the ferrets. And, I've been using the squeak and ferrevite to teach Quito and Fausto to come when I need them.

Quito is a climber. Often times I find myself nose-to-nose with this guy. This morning I used the squeak to summon the ferrets. And I hear the dreaded noise from behind the dryer. 'Gawd - how am I going to get him out?" but being a climber he made it up. (I do have to keep that laundry room door closed, but that's where the kitty litter is kept)

I hate to think how long I would have looked for him if he didn't really want to be found.

If you need your pet toy killed, send it to me and I will give it to Bear, so that you to can have the squeaky part left.

Temptation - thy name is "Ferret"

I received a call Sunday early afternoon about a healthy two year old ferret in Carlsbad needing a home. I just lost Augie, I thought I'd move myself to the top of my adoption list.

I wasn't expecting the call so soon. It can take six months for a ferret to be available. But this was Carlsbad, 2 year old ferret.

Sounds awfully familiar to Daisy. Daisy was the best ferret who ever lived. She was 2 years old when I adopted her from a family in Carlsbad. I had just lost Chester, and said I'd take the next ferret needing a new home.

Daisy was a lone ferret. She taught me that yes - ferrets can scream. Preferably at 2:3o am. She was terrified of other ferrets. But she bloomed. She became motherly. She was one of those rare "lap ferrets" you might have heard about.

So - I thought, I might sneak up to Carlsbad today and pick up this ferret. I'd have to stop enroute at the vet for a distemper shot and ear mite check. The real problem would be when my partner, Jim came home.

If I had $25 for every "your are not getting another ferret" lecture I could pay off the mortgage.

Better to ask forgiveness than to ask permission.

But then this morning I went to file my unemployment check I noticed the second week x'd out. Yes - I'm on the dole. Perhaps I should wait until I find a job or have some stable income before I bring in another pet.

Damn logic - I really want to drive and pick up that ferret. That's why I called it temptation.

(Actually - I want to go to Las Vegas, stay at a nice hotel, see some shows and bring home two babies. But that ain't gonna happen)

Update on the EIR

I did manage to have contact with Tom Gibson at the Department of Fish and Game, he is in their legal department. So far he seems like a very nice guy.

I had to explain, we want to do what is required of us to legalize ferrets in California - and, by the way, what exactly does the Fish and Game Commission require of us?

Mr. Gibson wasn't sure - he'll have to check and get back to me. He's only been with DFG for a year. But why didn't we ask this question ten year's ago? D'oh!

I have also asked help from Assemblyman John Pérez's office. When running for the state asssembly Mr. Pérez was kind enough to answer our survey - and unlike most respondents - he won. We need to know these people in the legislature.

Relations Sour With the Working Group

Unfortunately the "working group" isn't happy. They have asked I remove the survey that was emailed out (results will be in Sunday's CLIFFNotes) and have brought up the idea of another version of CLIFFNotes.

With all my heart I believe in transparency and communication. Nothing will happen without them. I have faith in the people who read CLIFFNotes. I will accept suggestions, criticisms, anything except insults. It is an open forum for all people interested in the California ferret issue.

Ferret owners are rightfully angry and impatient. We've been kept in the dark and waited too long.

I found Augie in a coma yesterday about 5:30 pm. Luckily the Avian and Exotic Animal Clinic was still open - I had him there by 6 pm. His blood sugar was 28. He was given a sugar solution but still looked like he had left us. He died during the night.
The picture above was taken the day I bought him in Las Vegas, clearly marked September 22, 2003, which makes him only 5 1/2 years old.

At the vet's office I was talking to someone else and mentioned the serenity prayer. How do you handle such things - change the things we can, accept the things we can't.

So Augie, I'm sorry you never got to places with me. But thank you for your kind soul.

Stuffing the Ballot Box

Someone added about 100 votes to our poll saying we should "wait for the working group." Looking at who clicked the link to the poll I see three people since the 100 votes appeared. Two of those three are members of the working group.

Was Yesterday a Holiday?

No one returned my phone calls yesterday regarding an EIR Consultant. I will wait until late morning today to try again.

There was a comment on our poll which showed diametrically opposed view points on this. The person said people were not educated enough to vote on this issue.

One thing that is very important to me is transparency. We are not doing anything shady or to be ashamed of. It is a simple bureacratic hoop we have to jump through. Sure there is politics involved - but we want to be scientific and credible. It is very hard to build support when you can't tell people what you are doing.

Dr Graening did provide a very useful information I'd like to share:

"have an academic institution update the 50-state survey and publish the results in a peer-reviewed journal.
using a neutral 3rd party, begin discussions with CDFG; establish the requirements needed to remove the ban, and determine the CEQA process/strategy that CDFG will follow, etc.

with these 2 tasks accomplished, writing the EIR will be straightforward."

I will update this blog daily until we have a proposed consultant or strategy.

A New Day For the EIR

It is Monday morning before 9 am and I have calls into a large environmental firm recommended by our previous hoped for consultant, the California Department of Fish and Game and Assembyman John Pérez.

The search for an EIR/CEQA consultant has started again. I know a little more than before and I've always known to leave it to a professinal.

It is rather humbling to call the Department of Fish and Game and ask their help in legalizing ferrets - but I have no pride. That disappeared a long time ago. Have you heard my story about size 41 underwear at the George Bailey Detention Center?

The goal is to legalize ferrets - it should be a simple goal, but not in California.

But I feel good now that I've quit waiting for the "Working Group" to finish their project. We need to proceed and get the work done. And if the bids come in higher than we expect, I'll be out there selling plasma and lining up sponsors to get this project finished once and for all.

I didn't go to jail wearing size 41 underwear for nothing!

UPS Loses Our T-Shirts

Box 2 of 2 our "Ferrets Are More Fun" T-shirt arrived from the silk screener on Thursday, March 5th. Odd, I thought, but Box 1 of 2 will probably arrive Friday.

It didn't. So I did a tracking and was told both boxes arrived Thursday at 4:22 pm.

UPS doesn't make it easy to file a claim or complaint, but I made it through.

The UPS driver tried to leave a note on my front door, but the dogs alerted me to his presence and near-escape. My dogs alert me to everything.

The driver says he specifically remembers delivering two identical packages a week earlier. Stuck me as odd, since I can't remember s*, (let's say much.)

In talking to the driver, I harked back to one TV show I've started watching, "Lie to me." I didn't see any tale tell signs of lying, but I don't believe the driver. I think he delivered them to a wrong address and was too lazy to go get them.

Once he left it also struck me as odd that there were no packages on our front door at 4:22 pm. My car is in the garage, it looks like no one is home, but I'm always in my home office and I was home all day. The one package did not show up until 6:30, after dark.

Oh how'd I'd like an FBI investigation into this serious crime. But this being California I'd be hauled off to jail (again) for the ferrets downstairs.

So today's plans include a big chunk of time inventorying the shirts that went out, the shirts that are here and filling a new order with Jimmy Jams T-Shirts, who is graciously going to reprint the lost shirts at his expense. I will be using him a lot in the future.

Still Worried About Fausto

Fausto stopped eating. Damn ferret, makes me worry so much.

His blood work came back normal. No obvious problems. He passed a physical without anything noticable wrong except weight loss. The guess now - iritable bowel syndrome.

Last Sunday was the low point, both emotionally and weight-wise. Since then he has been on Marshall Pet Products Duck Soup. Early in the week his vet had me add prednisone. And he'll take it and his weight is back up. Normal weight for a ferret, still skinny by Fausto standards.

Equally odd, he won't drink water out of the lixit bottle any more either. I have to have a bowl there for him.

I am supposed to take him back to the vet if he doesn't gain weight, but he has.

I've always had a special talent for knowing when an animal is sick. While others say wait before going to the vet - I can usually tell when something is serious before it is too late.

But Fausto has me stumped. He looks fine, won't eat and a certain spark is gone. For a moment this morning he did torment the dog. But not with the usual joy that task entails. Is he depressed? Nothing has changed.

Ferret Poop Is Not Getting The Best of Me

It hasn't been the best day. I'm still worried about Fausto. The runny brown poop is back but in less quantity.

And I had a hard time cleaning it up. Industrial strength tub and tile cleaner didn't bring it up. But I remembered another product in the cleaning cabinet.

Only two applications and all sign of the poop is gone. Then I just had to worry about not killing the ferret with toxic fumes.

So come Monday -Avain and Exotic Hospital, expect a call from me. I sure hope you aren't observing President's Day Weekend.

I spent Fausto's vet money on new tires. And it turns out Discount Tire was correct, you have to replace all Subaru AWD tires at once. That's four tires not two. And they need to have their stem piece replaced as well. Luckily, property tax isn't due for another week, so we might spend property tax money on Fausto.

And while I'm complaining. I was going to throw Bailey's bed out just now. I gather up the trash, and what do I find?

Thanks to our dog Bear for continually chewing this thing up, how am I going to evict Bailey now?

I had other problems today. It took six weeks to get an appointment to the dermatologist. When I arrived I picked up a message on my voice mail, a project I did had an error and it needed to be fixed asap. I waited 45 minutes at the doctor's and was never seen - had to leave. Sure enough it was my error. I couldn't charge the client for all that work, he'll probably never use me again.

Some days are unlucky. And today is Friday the 13th. I'm not normally superstitious, but my first four ferrets all died on a Friday the 13th, and the 5th was cremated on a Friday the 13th. Perhaps I should have stayed in bed, but who'd worry about Fausto?

Breaking Down and Going to the Vet

My unemployment ran out last week. We aren't making a mortgage payment this month. These are the bad old days.

And Fausto doesn't seem himself.

I thought it was the change of seasons. Fausto balloons up in the winter into a brick. He has kept his size, but his weight is down.

Someone has had runny poop for six weeks - I haven't been able to figure out who, but now I'm wondering if it isn't Fausto. Previously everyone seemed healthy, now I have one who just appears not quite right.

So with considerable anxiety - we're off to the vet this afternoon. Last time someone didn't seem right - Sunny had an unexplained anemia. It was an emotional roller coaster, about $2500 and we lost.

Fausto is special. (as they all are, but really, he's special). I love the way he came to me via the Lemon Grove Rehabilitation Center - just walked in their front door one Saturday. Big enough to trigger the automatic doors.

Perhaps I shouldn't share that. I've heard DFG say that ferrets go out and prowl for old people thinking they smell just like rabbits.

Wish us luck.

UPDATE

The vet's guess is some sort of bacterial infection. Fausto is on Amoxicillin and Flagyl. I forgot what fun it is to give ferrets Flagyl. Blood results should be in tomorrow. The words "insulinoma" and "anemia" did not come up - so I'm happy.

All I Want This Holiday Season is a Little More Freedom

I have the best ferrets - always have. Putting them back in their cage this morning I thought "wouldn't it be wonderful to take them outside? - that's what I'd really like to do this Christmas."

I'm one of those people who has problems with Christmas - brings out the worst in me. And my birthday is two days later. This year I'll turn 50. It will also mark one year since I've had a job. There's not Christmas at our house this year - I want it that way.

I'm usually pretty conservative when it comes to money, but for years I promised myself I'd go all out when I turned 50. I've never had a wedding, graduation or bar mitzvah. My parents told me I was born on March 17th (St Patrick's Day - what a coincidence) - it wasn't until I was 10 that my great aunt Eda let it slip I was born on Dec 27th.

A few years ago I decided I wanted to spend my glorious 50th in the Chile/Argentina wine country and then visit Easter Island. Ain't gonna happen this year - and I'm ok with that. A lot of people are losing their homes, misery is all around us - I'll just have to wait a little longer to celebrate the big 5 - 0.

But the truely clever mind always have a plan B. I want to do something truly outrageous on the big day - TAKE THE FERRET OUT IN PUBLIC.

Problem is, who pays for such foolishness/audacity/whatever? The ferret. I can't let that happen and that has been one of the biggest obstacles to getting ferrets legalized. I did it before, it was a complete disaster featuring ferret euthanasia and jail time.

As Janice Joplin sang "Freedom's just another word for nothing left to loose." And I can't afford to lose a ferret.

So perhaps I'm not so clever. My current plan is to find out if Denny's still offers a free lunch on your birthday and break out a special box of macaroni and cheese that evening.

Eight is my unluckly number. 2009 has to be better.

I had to assign member number 666 of the 3000 Club this morning. It turned out to be an easy decision.

I've been working on ferret legalization many years. I have a long memory and room for many grudges, but the most outrageous comments from someone who should be intelligent came from Former Assemblyman Richard E Floyd.

Even more incredible, after ten years what is on the top of my stack but an old thermal paper fax that this assemblyman sent to the California Animal Control Directors Association. I had to rekey it in, but this is what our honorary member wrote:

January 13, 1998
Dear CACDA Member:

As a member of the State Legislature, I want to speak directly to you about the issue of ferrets. No doubt you know that possession of this creature is a misdemeanor in California, and that the state authorizes seizure of these animals to be removed or, if deemed necessary to be eradicated.
I oppose legalization of this vicious predator. From my perspective, legalization will only guarantee that uncounted numbers of babies will be carried bleeding in to emergency rooms.
As evidence of the brutal aspect of ferrets, I turn your attention to three recent attacks by this animal against children. The enclosed news article describes an attack from December, where a “pet” ferret so viciously attacked twin infants in Anaheim that they needed hospitalization.
Dr Riley, of the Veterinary Public Health Section of the State Department of Health
Services, has also informed that two attacks occurred within just this past week, one in San Diego and another in Marysville, both of which also resulted in the hospitalization of small children.
In light of these attacks and knowing the predatory nature of this animal, I call upon each of the members of the California Animal Control Directors Association to seize any ferret brought into your facility or which otherwise comes into your possession. Seized animals should be removed from the state or eradicated. Under no
circumstances should ferrets be handed over to a private individual claiming
possession, as this remains a proscribed creature.

I'm not a religious person but I don't like to tempt fate.

My first job out of college was the graveyard computer operator at the Elgar Corporation, right behind the El Camino Cemetary. I was the only night worker...

Waiting for the computer to finish jobs, I had time to read books, and one book I read was The Demonologist.

And according to the demon-hunters, Mr and Mrs Warren, evil spirits are indeed attracted to the number 666.

I wouldn't want to assign that membership number to anyone good enough to support ferret legalization.

What should we do with member number 666? I'm tempted to donate a membership to DFG spokesman Ron J, but we're turning over a new leaf and trying to avoid negativity.

I asked for a 25% credit for the month which they declined, offering 10%. But since this was 25% of our monthly usage, 25% seemed fair.

This week I sent to the CLIFFNotes subscribers an appeal to vote No on California Proposition 8 - The email went out to 3,777 people. If you didn't see it, here is a copy of the letter at http://www.ferretsanon.com/CLIFFNotes/NoonProp8Letter.pdf

About 100 responses came back, 90 positive, 10 somewhat negative and only one out right hostile. I received a lot of congratulations for being married - something I didn't expect. Thank you every who sent in their good wishes, it made me feel great.

I was a little apprehensive sending out a political appeal to a ferret list. I don't wish anyone to feel I'm pushing my political views on them. But our California ferret list is about upholding and protecting rights - most people were supportive.

I don't want anyone to feel unwelcome to the ferret legalization efforts if they support Proposition 8. CLIFFNotes is about ferret legalization, nothing more. The view was presented as my own and sent out on my private email. Legalized same-sex marriage came as a shock to me - I kind of felt like the bird sitting in the bird cage and the door is left open - what do you do?

That being said, I appreciate all the messages of people sharing their feelings with me. There are a lot of gay people on our mailing list. And we all know how it feels to see our neighbors put up "Yes on 8" signs. Its hurtful - an obvious sign of rejection and hostility.

A few people asked what happened regarding Rocky. Rocky was a ferret I bought in Colorado Springs back in 1996. Rocky had personality. Since I'm already going to hell, I'll tell you that Rocky's full name was "Rocky God-damn-it!" because Rocky was always getting in trouble. And my spouse could often be heard "Rocky God Damn It, Get off the ... "

He had a successful adrenal surgery late 1997. On January 1st 1998 we were having a ferret walk in Balboa Park. Tom Tokar, a camera man for Channel 39 came to my house to get some photos of us getting ready. Rocky bit him on the thumb. As expected a quarantine order came down and Animal Control showed up at my door. They did not have a warrant so I wouldn't give them Rocky. We made arrangements to have Rocky quarantined at the vet and then sent out of state. (where I'd retrieve him) A few days later I asked Animal Control if they were familiar with the National Public Health Veterinarians study on rabies in ferrets which recommended a ten day quarantine. They called the Department of Health Services in Sacramento. DHS, knowing they had my ferret, replied with a fax "euthanize the ferret in custody immediately." Later they asked for Rocky's vaccination records. I spent about $13000 in court costs but we were denied "with prejudice" and not allowed in court.

And a few people asked about my experience at the Department of Real Estate. I passed the California Real Estate License exam in 2002 and applied for a real estate license. They sent me a letter saying my license application was being challenged on the grounds of moral turpitude. I had to go through 18 months of bureaucratic red tape. On one of the applications I had to check a box; married, single or divorced. I didn't and don't consider myself any of those things. I wrote in "Domestic Partner." My license application was denied for "failed family relationships" amongst other things.

So there's my story. I hate this election and the bad feelings being generated. I like to get along with people but when I hear my marriage has to be annulled because Jesus doesn't like it - I get a little upset.

One of the most interesting movies I've ever seen was "Liar, Liar" with Jim Carrey. How much easier life would be if people had to tell the truth. And how many lies we have to get past in our day to day lives.

"Ferrets are wild animals." "Ferrets are a threat to wildlife and public health." "The California Fish and Game Commission has not determined ferrets to be normally domesticated in this state."

Wouldn't it be fun if the people who made those statements were forced to tell the truth, just like Jim Carrey's character in that movie, in front of everyone? What would we hear?

Lies take on a life of their own and another one is causing me a little grief. I normally don't like to go off the ferret legalization topic, but this is my blog. So here goes.

The People Behind Proposition 8 Are Lying

Proposition 8, if passed, would deny the right of same sex couples to marry. It isn't about protecting marriage - the motive behind it is to fight the public acceptance of homosexuality.

"Time to fight homosexuality - My fellow Christians: Hold fast to your beliefs. Homosexuality is a sin. We are in a spiritual warfare. It is good against evil. Traditional marriage is good; homosexuality is evil." wrote one letter writer to the Ventura County Star.

That's just one letter writer, all it does is show their motivation.

A more blatant and dangerous lie can be found on the "iprotectmarriage.com" website:

Q: Isn't banning gay marriage just like banning interracial marriage?
A: It's completely unrelated. Blacks who endured prejudice can't wake up in the morning and not be black. None of us can be counseled out of our race or ethnicity. But homosexual behavior is a choice, and countless gays and lesbians have left the alternative lifestyle.

Homosexuality is not a choice. Isn't that obvious? Who chose their sexual orientation, can one person say they chose to be straight or gay? No, it is the way we came out of the womb or something we picked up very early in life. No one knows for sure.

The point is, lies hurt us. People not minding their own business hurt us. We aren't all straight. We aren't all dog and cat owners. A society advances and people achieve greater happiness given the freedom to be who they are.

Of course my freedom ends where yours begin. I have no right how to tell you to live your life either.

Please vote no on Proposition 8. If we let them take away this freedom, who's freedom will be next?

Update on Clifford, aka Mr X

It is with some relief that I can report that Clifford, formerly known as Mr. X is indeed doing better. (reported on in previous blog)

It is safe to say Clifford is being spoiled by his new owner, Rebecca. It's nice to have some happy news to report. There seems to be a dark cloud underneath a lot of people these days.

Feeling Blue over Mr X

Yesterday as I was putting together CLIFFNotes a call came in about someone's dogs finding and hurting a ferret. Ugh!

I drove down to Chula Vista from La Mesa, picked up the ferret and went to the Pet Emergency Specialty Center in La Mesa. They gave me the red carpet treatment. Was it because we spent $12,000 there last year on the dogs? Or was it because they call me for ferret blood?

Regardless - I am grateful. The initial Sunday afternoon diagnosis was the ferret had a puncture wound on one hip. The Monday morning, after X-ray diagnosis is much bleaker, something about spinal cord damage.

This ferret, who is listed as Mr X (I'm not always that creative) had that certain ferretude. I was hoping to get off cheaply, both financially and emotionally.

The price in both regards is going to be higher. It seems these days nothing is easy. But I know the ferret community won't let me down. We'll do everything we can - and I'm going to name this ferret Clifford. Expect a fundraising effort on his behalf soon.

Everybody Seems Familiar

I've been working pretty hard today on a non-ferret issue and subscriptions for CLIFFNotes keep coming in - which is a good thing.

But everyone looks familiar. I just got a subscription from someone named Amanda. That name and email address sure look familiar. But our database is nearing the 6000 mark - so I don't know or remember that many people.

Just to take a break I decided to count (actually the computer does it) to find out what is the most popular name in our database.

Turns out to be Michael, followed by Lisa, John and Jennifer. Amanda is the 9th most popular name amongst people on our list.

I'm also always interested in which zipcode is our best. It is Santee (92071) followed by Lakeside (92040). Looking at who visits the www.ferretsanon.com website, the most popular city is West Hollywood.

Nearly 100 people signed up for CLIFFNotes last week and 20 unsubscribed. Not too shabby. The finances have been a little scary. We were down to $11 in the bank account, but thanks to some very generous people, we're firmly in the black.

OK - time for me to go back to work.

Yesterday Was Not A Good Day

CLIFFNotes went out a day late this week. I really hate being late, it is supposed to go out Sunday evening, but the data wouldn't load on EmailBrain. "There system must be down - I'll have to be patient" I told myself.

Monday morning when technical support was available they told me my list was bad. The same list I've used for the past 2 1/2 years. Hello? Is there something wrong here?

So I switched to a new company - IContact. They are twice the price but the list uploaded in ten seconds. I spent 5 hours trying to upload it to EmailBrain.

In the middle of all this technical back and forth a call comes in from the adoption list. "Something terrible has happened... I need a new ferret" What happened? I asked. "Our dog killed our ferret - what can I do?" "Get rid of the dog" I answered before I could think about it.

"We did" was the reply. But was it the dog's fault? Was it really anyone's fault? But it sure made me sick to my stomach. I feel bad for being critical - I've had to deal with animal tragedies at my house.

Then I get an email Blizzard died. At least Blizzard died of old age (I believe) I hope we all go that way. But Blizzard, a ferret out of state I never met, I know he was special. I hate to hear that news.

There is a lot of anxiety at my house. I've been pretty much unemployed for 18 months. I've got great skills in databases, web development and marketing, but I must be too old to get a job.

I'm worried about my own ferrets. What happens if one of them gets sick? My unemployment insurance stopped because a past employer put something in the file. There is no money coming in until an interview. That darn Quito is just too skinny - I think he was born a skinny weasel.

Although life is stressful, don't feel sorry for me. I did manage to marry well and invest well about 15 years ago. I have a pretty good life. Its just sometimes life seems to not give any breaks.

I have spent my unemployment time learning a lot of new things regarding web marketing. I enjoy it. I'm trying to start my own company. I have my eyes out for a job, but I've never seen the job market so bad in San Diego since Ronald Reagan was president.

I Hate it When People Give up their Ferrets

Another email came in, on our guest book at www.ferretsanon.com about someone looking to place their ferrets. Because of the bad economy they are moving into an apartment and the owner fears the maintenance person will discover the ferrets and turn them in.

A "Free to Good Home" approach.

I have been answering the Ferrets Anonymous phone and email for 15 years - I hate this situation - and it is more common than you would think.

People must feel guilty for owning ferrets, they think they aren't providing them with a good enough home. Someone else out there would be a better owner.

I am haunted by by a case many years ago. A woman feeling this gave up her ferret. The new owner would not let her see it and the feeling was that something bad (and intentional) had happened to the ferret. The new owner seemed a bit of a sicko. That poor woman cried on my shoulder more than once.

Perhaps the maintenance person owns ferrets - its happened! Perhaps the apartment managers are more understanding than you'd think.

The last apartment I rented I snuck the ferrets in. No one can enter the apartment without advance notice. I just snuck the ferrets in the back room, not that that landlord ever did any service. I put heavy plastic under the doors and there was no damage. I also had the carpets cleaned before I left, no odor.

Giving away your ferrets could be a permanent solution to a temporary problem. There are people in Ferrets Anonymous who will foster your ferrets if you run into trouble.

Disagreeing is OK

It's not a secret - I don't care who knows, there is some serious disagreement going on within the LegalizeFerrets.org (or whatever you wish to call it) working group that is planning the next steps towards ferret legalization in California.

The disagreement involves how important is the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) in regards to ferret legalization.

I received an email this morning from one of my favorite ferret people:

Posting in CliffNotes for 5000+ readers to see that the group is in
disagreement is not only divisive, it gives everyone the impression that we are
once again fighting the old "my way is better" fight reminiscent of just a
couple years ago.

California ferret legalization efforts were previously notorious for their flame wars. We are basically paranoid to avoid that.

But what we have here is healthy. We have people seriously involved and committed to ferret legalization trying their best to get it done. We are acting like adults.

I've been involved with organizations all my adult life. Every organization has at least one dissenter. And what is really annoying about this person - is they are usually right! (oh, how I hate that - are you listening Betsy Hawyard?)

Plus - CLIFFNotes will never be sugar-coated. People subscribe and read it because they want to know what is going on. Its not just propaganda.

But we will never trash people, we will always treat everyone's opinions with respect and I appreciate the valid questions being asked.

Negativity Rears Its Ugly Head or Why can't everyone be nice like Lance and Kimberly?

Ferret people are the meanest people I know. I am a ferret person. That is not a good logical starting point.

A Muslim attorney once told a group that while all terrorists are Muslims, not all Muslims are terrorists.

So I hope it goes for me. Although I must be far from perfect because I know a lot of ferret people in California don't like me.

Today's little flare up started when someone didn't like a suggestion I put out there. When a rude response came back, a rude response went out - "what charm school did you go to?" I sarcastically asked - and sent to the whole group.

Then this little gem came back:

"Pat,

I think you need to stop telling people what to do. This is another reason I refuse to join your little click. If I find my last name listed anywhere I will let you have it. In this state some of us wish to keep our names low key. Lisa"

So much for "How to Win Friends and Influence People" a great book from Dale Carnegie that I think I need to reread.

So my apology. And my admiration to Lance who said:

To keep from spreading negativity throughout FA, we all have to remember to keep certain things to ourselves at times. We all have a responsibility to the organization to make sure that you remain as positive as possible.

And Kimberly who chimed in:

I do realize that email's can be difficult because you can't hear a person's tone of voice. But I really think when a problem first arises it's best to nicely explain concerns or problems and see if they can easily be fixed. You get better results with honey than you do vinegar. I hope I didn't get anyone mad at me I just really want to see ALL of us try to get along and work TOGETHER.

And if I disapear - blame it on Lisa!

I Never Thought The Day Would Come

Lance had mentioned he was thinking of doing this Blog entry - but for some reason I am inspired to write this. Perhaps it has something to do with this photo which is pinned to my partner's bulletin board:

On my partner's shoulder is Daisy. Daisy was the most remarkable ferret I have ever met. She was handed down from older brother to younger brother when I got her at 2 years of age. She lived another 7 years and even died cheaply. That sounds crass - but ferret owners know its hell to spend thousands on your ferret's cancer (or whatever treatments) and have them die. I have so many wonderful memories of Daisy.

I had Daisy when I met Jim. Ferrets were new to Jim and required quite an adjustment on his part. "Your condo smells like a game refuse" Jim told me early on, the beginning of a beautiful relationship.

The point is - back then, both my pets and relationship were not recognized. I always thought ferrets would be legal in California long before I could get married.

Last year we conducted a Field Research poll on our desired ferret legalization ballot measure. I was stunned when only 38% of Californians said they would vote to legalize ferrets. In talking to the San Jose Mercury News I told them "if we polled on gay marriage the numbers would have been higher." Ferret legalization was supposed to be a very uncontroversial issue.

What I didn't realize is that Field Research did include the gay marriage issue on the same poll and something like 42% of those polled said they'd support gay marriage.

I'm 49 - soon to be 50. Growing up gay in the 70's was very difficult - I don't think younger people can imagine and I hope they are having an easier time. It still isn't easy - but I've reached an age and a level of stability I don't have to worry too much what other people think.

However - there have been moments.

I applied for a license from the California Department of Real Estate. On the application I had to choose between married, single or divorced. "I'm none of those things" I told them - I will not ignore the commitment I have with Jim.

Jim has stuck with me through a lot. I called Jim when Rocky was taken from his vet's and euthanized - all because I am an advocate for ferret legalization. He met me at San Diego animal control. It was a terrible time for me. San Diego Animal Control told me they weren't going to euthanize Rocky that night - "call your lawyer" they said. They euthanized him 90 minutes after saying that.

I was on anti-depressants for three years after that. The doctor had me on 12 prescriptions over those years. I often thought he was helping me to kill myself.

Jim was the one who dealt with the seizures they caused and got me off the floor.

Jim rushed home when 9 armed agents broke down our front door to confiscate the ferrets after a child grabbed Raleigh (Daisy got blamed for it, the police department had taken a polaroid of the "suspect") and got scratched at Balboa Park.

Jim visited me twice a week for the 17 days I spent in maximum security at at the George Bailey detention center.

I wrote in "domestic partner" on the real estate license application. It was denied, for among other things, "Failed Family Relationships." F.U. Department of Real Estate.

Jim and I are quite a pair. Imagine if Martha Stewart and Joanne Embry were lesbians - we'd be the male version.

When I met Jim I had three ferrets, one being Gonzo. Gonzo must have been inbred - he was "special." He loved the sound of broken glass. Guess what Jim likes to collect? We made a deal, if the ferrets break anything in their room, too bad. Elsewhere in the house I have to pay for it.

If you call the San Diego Ferrets Anonymous office you are likely to hear Jim in the background yell "Clean this ferret shit up and use the disinfectant." I would think it is not an emergency and could wait. I'd clean it up before I went to bed.

Relationships require a lot of work. I'm afraid Jim has done all the work. He's dealt with me during my ups and downs and pays most of the household bills. While I feel very good about what I've done for ferrets, I've really sucked at making a living.

So for a couple of months at least - we have the option of getting married. Who could have imagined that?

I hope it is followed by the opportunity to have legal ferrets! I would love to take the ferrets out and about and maybe that isn't such a far off dream as it once seemed.

Ferrets Should Be Legal Because They're So Darn Cute!

This morning - after working on a client's website it is time to clean up after the ferrets and jump on the dreaded eliptical. The ferrets are downstairs playing and getting into trouble, and Shorty our Corgi accompanies me.

Shorty is the only small dog, the other dogs range from 55 to 100 lbs. He is the baby and he owns the place. He plays very rough with our Golden Retriever but is a little sissy when it comes to the ferrets.

Quito is the most recent ferret in the house. He has been passed around and I don't know how old he is. He lived as an only pet with an older person for 18 months before he came here. He was very shy and didn't know what to make of these gigantic dogs and other ferrets.

But he has blossomed. I've seen it in other ferrets and it is a joy to watch.

Shorty likes to play. He's a little devil chasing the ferrets and tormenting the cats (one of which is going to need anti-anxiety medication any day now).

Quito won't have it. If Shorty wants to start trouble, Quito will finish it. Not quite 2 lb Quito is determined to get the best of Shorty.
How I wish I had the video camera this morning, but these guys never cooperate in the presence of a camera. I hope someone can capture the fun at their house and enter our video contest. Then again, it might be shown on the DFG website - mean rotten ferret chases sweet little dog.

Looking for Help With the Upcoming YouTube Ferret Video Contest

LegalizeFerrets.org is about to launch a YouTube Ferret Video Contest. As opposed to writing up the rules and putting them in CLIFFNotes and the webpages (http://www.ferretsanon.com/ and http://www.legalizeferrets.org/) I thought I'd make a video to announce the contest.

If anyone in the San Diego area would like to help - even just to hold the video camera I would appreciate it. If you have video editing skills so much the better!

Thanks for the Scoop on the Poop

After all the comments about smelly ferret poop in my house I have lost the argument. Special thanks to Beverly for being the nail in the coffin. "See - even ferret people agree" - I was told; Marshall's Pet Diet leads to smelly ferret poop.

It also led to healthy, happy ferrets - but I relented and thought I'd try Pretty Pets Natural Gold. It's been a day and half and only Quito is eating it.

It was a great opportunity for an experiment. When I feed the dogs in the morning I have to spill a few kibble for the ferrets to eat (yeah, I also give my ferrets ice cream - live a little). Only Quito took the bait and ate what he thought was dog food.

Fausto - who loves dog food wouldn't touch it, and neither would Augie.

So I'm off to buy another bag of Marshall's and I'll try mixing it together.

I don't think my partner will be too worried about smell ferret poop when he gets home from Colorado on Monday.

Our dog Bear put a big hole in each couch last night - couldn't put two holes in one couch. Smelly ferret poop won't seem like that big of a problem.

In Trouble Over Smelly Ferret Poop

A new battle has commenced at my house over smelly ferret poop. And the Marshall ferret food is at the center of the issue.

I feed my ferrets Marshall Pet Foods. It was recommended by our vet, Dr. Jenkins at the Avian and Exotic Animal Hospital.

About a year ago I switched from Totally Ferret. To be honest I stopped using Totally Ferret when they stopped answering our requests for sponsors for the annual Ferret Legalization meetings.

My ferrets are healthy and doing well on Marshalls.

But my partner who believes in beauty over function says the Marshall food causes the ferret poop to stink more. I can't smell the difference.

Ferret nutrition is a little controversial. A few purisits tell me ferrets were meant to eat mice. That ain't gonna happen, but I do want the best possible diet.

Nevada or Not?

Enthusiasm for ferret legalization is picking up after a very successful booth at the Orange County Pet Expo. About 250 signed up and we are getting emails from people who saw the booth but didn't sign up.

It's been a hectic time with the Ferret Round Up but it is time to think ahead.

Every September LegalizeFerrets.org holds a "Legalize Ferrets Revival." This Septembers could be especially meaningful because we should be knee deep in our EIR.

I'd love to have a Revival where we could work with actual ferrets. Nevada comes to mind. So here is a poll - whaddya think?

The Orange County Pet Expo started yesterday, April 11th and LegalizeFerrets.org has a booth. This is our second year at the Pet Expo and it is a little difficult to get organized because it comes so shortly after the Ferret Round Up. I didn't want to burden Lance with all the details as he was preparing to run for the President of Ferrets Anonymous.

But the booth is up, it looks great, and my thanks to Ed and Mary for helping me.

I relied on my Tom Tom to get me there Friday evening after work. The damn thing took me to the back streets of Irvine (I thought Irvine was all freeway). Luckily somone at a Union 76 station gave me directions. So arriving late and 3 hours on the road, I appreciate Mary and Ed's help and support. (Mary, I was only kidding about having the cocktail waiting.)

Last year over 300 people signed up for CLIFFNotes - hopefully we'll do even better this year.

My Strange Dream About Lance and Arnold

I was glad to hear about Lance winning the Presidency of Ferrets Anonymous. Last night I had a strange dream.

I dreamed that on his first day of president of Ferrets Anonymous Lance secured a meeting with Governor Schwarzenegger. I was in the background cleaning trash dumpsters (I wonder what Freud would say about that). He had one hour to make the case for Arnold to legalize ferrets.

After the hour was up Lance came out of the meeting to say Governor Schwarzenegger wouldn't repeal the ban.

Kind of reminded me of one my favorite late night movies:

Will Lance curse California with a plague of locusts? Will the Sacramento river turn red? Hopefully not - but I am expecting great things from our new President of Ferrets Anonymous.

When Ferrets Smell Like Grandma

Friday is house cleaning day for me. Every other week or so the ferrets get a bath.

Do ferrets smell? If you keep their cage clean, launder the bedding frequently, I don't smell them.

I once did rescue an unneutered male ferret. The person called me and a pick up was arranged. He lived in a condo complex and that day all the house numbers were removed because they were re-stuccoing the building. I didn't need house numbers, it was easy to smell my way to his unit. That ferret went right to the vets for an emergency neutering.

But I love the Marshall Pet Products shampoo, conditioner and spritzer. I think they stole the formula for Channel #5.

That was my grandmother's favorite perfume - or at least I think so. Smells have powerful emotional impacts on people. Every other Friday or so I feel like my grandmother is back with us.

Thanks Marshall Pet Products. I also use your food. One suggestion though. I've bought the big bottles of your shampoo and I always find it a week after the first use, tipped over and contents all over the drawer. I think you need to redesign the bottle.

Afraid or Not?

I get an occasional email from California ferret owners afraid of being discovered. Do you let your neighbors know you have ferrets? The advantage is if one gets out the neighbors will know where to return it. The disadvantage is if you have bad neighbors.

The tragedy here is part of the fun is sharing ferrets. Ferrets, unlike cats, love new things. Like dogs they love to go places, meet new people, explore...

Back in 2000 I had nine armed agents break down my door to confiscate my ferrets (three San Diego police, three Fish and Game wardens and three Animal Control Officers) so I am very careful now. If I had ferrets, and I am not saying I do, they would be something like these guys:

Augie - five years old. Bought him in a pet store while in Las Vegas for a wedding. He is a calm soul who when exiting his ferret nation cage likes to chew on the carpet.

Fausto - wandered into the Lemon Grove Rehabilitation Center. Largest ferret I've ever had, eats everything. Loves the dogs and prefers to be with them. He has some very odd dog behavior such as lying in the middle of the floor while the other ferrets go into the cabinets.

Quito - He was found by a co-worker's brother and they kept him for 18 months. Finally they decided ferrets weren't for them and since they said this on my birthday, and it was a terrible birthday (including getting laid off the next day) I kept him. He reminds me so much of a past ferret Raleigh, (the one I went to jail for) it is kind of spooky. Do they get reincarnated?

But of course these are just pretend ferrets.

My First Ferret Blog

The Internet has given us a lot of tools and advantages in our efforts to legalize ferrets in California. Since 2005 we've been publishing an ezine called CLIFFNotes - California Legalization Initiative For Ferrets (though no longer a ballot initiative, still a legalization initiative). If you aren't receiving it - sign up here.

Now it is time to try Blogging - something brand new to me.

The difference between a Blog and an ezine is that the Blog is meant to be more interactive, the ezine is meant to inform. Why can't we have both?

So wish me luck in trying to create a sucessful Blog just as we have created a sucessful ezine in CLIFFNotes.
